Gurgaon – a megacity with better policing in near future
Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda sought a special financial package for better policing in Gurgaon and Faridabad, saying that these two districts adjoining Delhi need the same level of policing as the national Capital.
Hooda made the demand in his speech at the chief ministers’ conference on internal security held in New Delhi on Wednesday 5th June 2013. The conference was attended by chief ministers of states, Lt. governors and administrators of Union territories, besides the officers of the central and state governments.
While demanding megacity status for Gurgaon and Faridabad, the chief minister urged the Prime Minister to sanction special package for the Haryana Police. Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Union finance minister P Chidambaram were also present in the conference.
Hooda said that the security environment in Haryana is largely impacted by the state’s proximity to the national capital. Seven out of 21 districts of Haryana fall within NCR. There has been rapid economic growth in areas adjoining Delhi.
“Haryana state is a buffer for safety and security of Delhi and as such Haryana Police has to remain active to tackle the problems connected with the National Capital Territory. The megacity policing scheme should be extended to cover Gurgaon and Faridabad,” he said.
Therefore, Gurgaon and Faridabad must be given central assistance at par with megacities, so as to upgrade the police force and related infrastructure in these cities equal to that of Delhi, he said.
Hooda said that the Haryana government is firmly committed to combating crime against women and measures have been taken in this regard to instill a sense of security in women. A helpline number 1091 has been activated in the state to help women in distress. At least one Mahila PCR Van has been provided in all the districts.
An additional DGP level officer has been posted exclusively for crime against women and one lady DSP has been posted as nodal officer for crime against women in every district. Two women police stations are functioning and four more will start shortly, the CM said.
